Converting to pre mix?
#1
Hi,
I have a Sport 400 Im rebuilding right now, looking at the oil pump system, Im not confident that the system is good. So I want to convert to pre mix.
The questions are, is running premix as reliable?
What is the ratio? I spoke to the Amsoil dealer who said he recommends 100:1, I was thinking 30 - 50 : 1.
Its not going to be raced, just ridden by my my who is no speed demon...

It's more reliable in the terms that you won't have to worry about your pump failing just making sure you don't put just straight gas in like I almost have a time or two. I use the Amsoil oil injector oil and pre-mix it at 50:1. It runs extremely clean and hardly any smoke at all. I use Amsoil in all my quads and vehicles.

The best way to do this would be to get the pump running. When the engine is installed in the atv, prime the pump by loosening the bolt on the pump to let the oil through, run the first tank at 30:1, at an idle on first start up, trip the oil pump lever to full open with the line off the engine, u should see slo drips from the end of the line. After u see oil coming through the line confirming oil pump operation, fasten the line back on, dump the fuel & put in straight gas. After this u should be good to go.
Running premix will actually lean the fuel on 2 strokes that run oil pumps, rejetting the carb will need to be done for long engine life.
