Default Brass or Aluminum

Just wondering which is softer Brass or aluminum. I broke a shear pin on my little 1.2hp outboard on my canoe (Did the nail trick to finish fishing) but when I got home I found a box of aluminum nails the right size and was thinking of using them as shear pins. (I am cheap and dealers are far away with the price of gas and all) so would appreciate any input.

I'm not a metallurgist or a good speller, but brass would be harder. I would take the box of aluminum nails as backup and if they don't work, you could build a house that would last forever.
