Default SP 500 Backfiring

I have an 2004.5 SP 500. I was riding it yesterday for about 20 minutes, nice and slow in some very shallow puddles (didn't even come to the bottom of the rim), and it just died on me, so I went to start it I got a really loud backfire and it didn't start, so I waited like 30 seconds and it started right up. Then tonight I was riding for about an hour, stopped for about 5 minutes with the atv turned off, then when I went to start it it did then as soon as I hit the gas it died, so I started it and it backfired again. Any ideas what this could be? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Ty

You probably already know this but alot of people w key fobs on their key will accidently shut em' down. IIt's stupid but it happens and seems to be an intermittant prob to the rider. If this is you take the crap off your key ring and try. Shutting off at throttle might cause the backfire upon starting back up. If not check the plug and wire for rips, looseness, cracks.

Check that your plug wire is not pinched between the gas tank and the frame comman problem on the 04.5's....

Thanks for the input. I will try these things. Hopefully it is an easy fix, (I think it will be).

Thanks

Ty
