38 tmx versus 39pwk which is better?

throw that mikuni 34 out, there was a post over there a couples days back,
to let me beleive a 38tmx giving more power than a PWK,well you can do what you want but the pwk 39 is by way far the easiest and more efficient
carb on this motor,or if you afford a lectron will fit even better but that another story, the stock carb just can't deliver what you motor now need for,i mean ported jug with stock carb isn't a combo that work anyway so you'll allways have flat spot in there...

Well when I my motor grenaded it was leaking and when I got it Race ported and all the other stuff done to it I put on a new set of HPD hard motor mounts and the leaking went away. Before it didn't matter what I did I could get it to quit. I tied the carb down and everything but to no avail. Heck it would even slosh fuel out when I would push it and the paddle tires would kinda bounce. Weird???

I don't know why I have this problem but, i have always had the problem since it was new.I changed everything floats needle and seat . still not right. the dam thing leaks when i turn on the fuel with the quad off ontill i shake the quad.I've tried to set the float up so it would shut the fuel off but then i don't get enough fuel at top end. the float is very sensitive, i just can't get it right, one way or another.leaking or not enough fuel,no between to two.If my scrammy was my primary quad i probley would change the carb to something like the tmx 42.

have used all 3 of the carbs mentioned .
Currently we use the 39pwk (although my website says different ) . It does have really good throttle responce and does tune easier than the TMX.
The TMX can really go lean at low throttle settings , which is a disaster on a modded automatic clutched quad .
The bored stock carb , in my opinion , does a good job aswell . If I was building a trail riding quad I would probably stick with that because it FITS PERFECTLY . I have seen well tuned quads with a 35.5 carb out run ones with bigger carbs , having a huge carb isn't everything .
Mike Hair at CPI racing seems to think he can get very close to as much power out of a 35.5 carb than he can out of a 39PWK on the 400 Polaris . He is a darn good tuner and I respect him .
A full race 400 with a 39PWK will crank about 75 horses , I would think the same engine with a 35.5 would probably get close to 72 .
I haven't tried it , but I with I had time to try a UFO in a 35.5 carb and figure how to jet it , that may be a nice combo .
I have bench flowed a 38 TMX , a 43 TMX taper bore , and a 39 PWK . The 39 PWK outflowed both the Mikunis and as a matter of fact the 38 and the 42 flowed identical . The 42 *may* have better throttle responce due to the possible (probable ) vacuum pulse to the jets .

Many may not think 3hp would be much, but if I can ever gain 2-3 hp from a carb and get awesome response then I will buy it (unless it breaks the bank)

well does that mean if i use the pwk i might as well take the starter off cause it will be shot soon enough. hey i just thought of something. i have the tranny out right now and the starter is pretty accessable at the moment. if i fab up something to shield the starter from leaking gas will it cause a heat problem?

while i got starter on the brain, can you find some much sturdier pull start components than the stock poop? the last time my starter went out that plastic wind up piece lasted about 30 pulls and i hear that was probably not bad.
