Why is 325 Trail Boss so slow?
#1
I am considering buying a new T-Boss very soon and I have gotten great info and response from this BBS. Part of the reason I looked at the T-Boss (besides the great suspension & seat) was because I could get a 325 for the price of the 250s (Recon & etc). I figured more power and speed for the same money was a great deal. From what I have read though it sounds like it is actually slower than these other machines. Any ideas on why this is? Is it just a low powered motor? Would pipe and K&N make a difference? Should I just expect same price range so same speed? It seems like Polaris is most often the fastest in a given class, so why is T-Boss different?

I would not say the trail boss is the fastest vehicle Polaris makes, but it will still beat a Recon. My buddy has a 2000 Recon and in a drag race, I can beat him pretty good. On trail riding, they are pretty equal. The main reason the tb is slower is that Polaris has not tuned the motor to run hard. Changing the pipe and clutch work will really wake it up. Also, the trail boss gives up quite a bit of weight to the Recon. See if you can find a dealer that will let you ride one before you decide its too slow.
P.S. By the way, the buddy that has the Recon just bought a 500 Scrambler 2x4. He now calls the Recon "the slow thing".

Lighter weights in the clutch and a white or green clutch spring will let the engine rev higher
and let you use more of the power you already have. The white spring seems to work fine for the 4-strokes, 2-strokes prefer the green.

The reason I thought the Recon was faster was that I am seeing a lot of posts here saying the T-Boss would only run 43. My old Recon would run 45. Not a big difference but when comparing 229 -325 cc's I would have expected a large difference the other way. I am glad to hear it is not the case because I am about convinced to get the T-Boss now. When you raced the Recon, were you and the other rider about the same size? Did you have a lot higher top speed or just quicker takeoff?

My buddy that has the Recon is about 50 lbs. lighter than I am. The Recon seems to be geared pretty low. 45 for the Recon sounds about right. I am guessing that the trail boss will run about 46-48. Not a hugh difference and I wouldn't base a purchase decision on this small difference. The trail boss will get up to top speed a little faster than the Recon will. In tight trails, they are pretty much equal. I didn't buy the Recon because it just didn't feel right to me. It felt to small and low to the ground, plus my wife hates shifting. I think the extra weight of the trail boss counteracts the differences in the engine sizes. I put a uni filter on the tboss a few weeks ago and it has helped throttle response some. Neither of these machines are designed for top speed, but I think the trail boss can be modified pretty easy to get some additional speed out of it.
