The weep hole is doing its job , when the seal goes bad it lets water drip out and not run into the balancer area .
You need 1 cover gasket , 1 pump gasket , and 2 seals . the seals are about $10 each and the gaskets are about $4 each .
The worst part of the job are removing the flywheel and unscrewing the slotted nut on the crankshaft it takes a special socket for the slotted nut and know this ---> THE SLOTTED NUT HAS LEFT HAND THREADS.
Please don't try to weld the hole shut .... LOL

Jay, you are right. The 400 in the Sportsman is based on the 4 stroke 500. As I stated earlier in this thread the problem is the mechanical seal behind the waterpump impeller. I really hope Murph has seen through all of the B.S. in this thread and repaired his quad.
I really wish people that have no idea about what is being discussed would just lay back and read the thread and learn something instead of posting on the thread when they don't even have close to a clue about what is going on. So Chevyboy, if you read this, next time think before you tell someone to weld a hole in their engine much less argue the fact that the hole is actually there!

Murph22083 - the manual says ... "If the mechanical seal is leaking, remove the engine, separate the engine crankcase and replace the mechanical seal as described ..." (not a Polaris manual so maybe there is another way?)
Looks like a lot of work. Unless you have a LOT of miles on it, it shouldn't have gone out this soon. Perhaps you can Get Polaris to cover it.
