please help with carb jetting/performance on 400 trail mod

I have a low speed sputter that seams to be from a lean condition. So I went and got a new plug, put it in and drove the bike at this low speed for about a half of a mile then pulled the plug to look at it. It was very light so I took out the 35 pilot that was in the bike and put in a 55 that I had at home and started with the air screw 1/2 turn out thinking that this 55 would be too rich. Well I'm at 2.5 turns out on the 55 pilot and I still have a light plug, although it is slightly darker and It feels like the sputter is a little better but is still there. Is it possible that I need to go even bigger on the pilot than a 55 or am I not doing something right here.
Other carb specs= main = 155, slide = 6, needle = EEG
I have an EGT gauge and at low speeds its about 800, as I give it more throttle it goes to about 1000 and stays about there till I get up near full throttle where its between 1250-1300 usually.

eab,you must wait some time after a new plug to get accurate reading,
because it will always tell light brown as well as the plug is full clean,i went to 60 pilot on the first test but was too rich rich,
now i run 45 pilot everydays,screw at about 3/4 open out,6.5 slide,EEG
needle.1000 degree in the mid is little rich...
1250 to 1300 on top is real good, maybe a little high just .010.

So what would a 6.5 or 7.0 slide do for me? Would that improve the sputter at low speeds (like when you are trail riding and you take off slowly).

That is how you do a main jet plug reading. If you want to do a slow speed circuit or needle circuit plug check you need to ride in that range then cut it off and then do a plug check. It really does take some time to get some color on a new plug.

Oh yeah EAB. I have just recently put in a 7.0 slide and it really cleaned up the midrange. No more blub blub blub blub. That drove me freaking crazy!! I haven't done a plug check on it yet but I think it will be ok cause Daryl told me that's what they do(install 7.0 slide) when one of there bikes do that. Not all of them do it he said but when they do, that usually fixes it.

keep in mind the trail mod is midrange power cruiser while the race mods is a top end addict,so the trail mods, need less gas in the midrange and lower temp than a race mods wich need a lot more fuel in the mid but a lot less on top,a 7.0 slide will work better for a trail mod as well.

I'll try putting a 7.0 slide in and see how that does. So where do you get a 7.0 slide? I got my EEG needle and 35 pilot from Carb Parts Warehouse online but they dont list any slides. I'll try calling them. Where else, only HPD?
