Polaris H.O. 500 4x4/ How Fun Is It?
#1
Hello,
My name is Charles and I have a 2000 Banshee for screaming in the dunes and firing up those fire roads, etc. Also I learned on my 98 300ex.
Tommorrow I am going down to the Polaris dealer to take a look at what they have. I am thinking
selling my mint 98 300ex and buying the biggest, baddest beast I could own, I want a hillclimber, mudder winterized atv beast. Please give me your opinions. I would like a 4x4 sport. Maybe
the Sportsman? I like the racks, 2wd/4wd ****.
What is the best out there?
What would you buy for the ULTIMATE FUN MUD
WINTER MACHINE..And Yes I would put 25's or 27's on it.

Well, the biggest and baddest would obviously be the HO Sportsman. But you also mention that you want a sport. Not the same. If you want a bada$$ 4x4 sport, then the Scrambler 500 4x4 is what you want. Then again, if you want a good mix of both, look at the 400 Explorer. If you want........... well just go look.

If your looking for the biggest, baddest you can get, then you should wait and see what the 650 Kawi has to offer. But as of today the biggest, and baddest 4x4 quad is still the Grizzly! If you are dead set on getting a Polaris I can't help you much. I haven't ridden most of them, and the ones that I have ridden was very limited.

I was having to make the same decision a couple of months ago. I had ridden three of friend's utility ATV's and got the bug bad. But since I also ride dirt bikes off-road, I was afraid that I would miss the performance if I got a pure utility ATV. All of the utility models I tested were fun crawling through the woods and on slower trails, but the suspension and lack of power became very apparent when the speed increased or the trail opended up even a minor amount. I test drove a 400 Scrambler, and couldn't wipe the smile off my face. Now that I've spent some more time on it, I'm REALLY glad that I didn't buy a pure utility model. I'm also glad that I bought a model that can switch between 2 and 4 wheel drive. Sliding through the corners on a fast trail or forest road is a blast. I have also found that it's nice to be able to switch into 4 wheel drive without stopping when you're climbing a fast or tough trail, and decide that you need 4 wheel drive. I have taken my Scrambler up some very tough rock climbs here in Colorado, and while a model with low range is certainly better for that type of thing, I think that I can get anywhere I want to here in the mountains of Colorado. I have seen many 500, 4-stroke Scramblers on the mountain trails here also, so other riders must be coming to the same conclusion. I'm now deciding which pipe and clutch spring to put on. I can't wait for the snow... The 400 Explorer might a be a good choice if you really want the low range capabilities, but want the extra power and upgrade ability of the two stroke. My dealer had a killer deal on new Explorer 400's when I was shopping. Oh yeah, if nothing else, riding a Scrambler with the Polaris automatic trans instantly changed my mind about buying a Honda Rancher (my first choice).
Good luck,

I went down to the Polaris dealer and liked the way the Scrambler 500 4x4 felt and looked. It is
plush. I don't like the articles the magazines are writing up on the belt slippage and the in/
out of 4wd sometimes. The Scrambler might appeal to me becasue it is a sport machine and has 4wd.
Time will tell I am going to enjoy my 2000 Banshee and rail up some hills.
Thanks
