I read magazine tests for scramblers and sport polaris atv's and the average speeds they come up with are between 56 to 60mph.
Well their wrong, I own a 2000 scrambler 400 2x4 and I raced against my suzuki sp200 dual sport bike. It has a speedo (thats accurate) to tell me the top speed I can achieve.
On a paved strip my I was side by side with my buddy on the sp200. We raced about a quarter mile and at the end of the race the speedo on the sp200 had reached 70 mph.
The scrambler 400 reaching 70mph thats a lot more realilistic than 56 to 60mph. Come on lets think for a sec ITS A 400CC TWO STROKE ENGINE,it would be pretty sad if the machine only did 56 to 60.

That sounds about right, I clocked my SC500 against my DR350 at 67-70 mph

The 4x4 500 will run around 63-65 mph on radar. PERIOD. (stock)

The 400 2-stroker will run 65-69 mph. on RADAR, I use the Stalker Pro.

Polaris has one of the most accurate speedos out on the ATV's. Not sleds.

Tomtcat your results sound a lot better than what the magazines have to say for their test results. I think they better pick up the kind of radar that you have.
Or maybe their results would be right with radars they have now if YAMAHA quits paying the atv mags. to lower the top speed of polaris' to make it look like polaris has no competiton with them. LOL.

Ya the ragazines tend to go which way the money flows.

Some guys get offended when ya tell em the true speeds! Glad to c your the exception!

I rode once whith Glen Hansen of ATV Sport Magazine. Seems lika nice enough guy but the kid with him (test pilot) needs to learn proper trail manners when riding with County Forest officials!! Darn kid really made us look a bit bad. On even a sourer note here in WI it is illegal to ride in wetlands and water along with modified exausts of any KIND! However the Mags keep putting front cover pics with ATV's in water over the seats!

We just got approval for almost 100 miles of trails here on a test period, I sure hope we can keep everyone in a somewhat responsible mode. Oh man gettin off base here! cya

Hey tomtcat~
I see you're from Spooner. About 4 times a year my group of riders start at Birchwood, ride the Tuscobia Trail up to Park Falls, stay overnight and ride back the next day. That is one of the smoothest trails I have ever ridden on...a great weekend ride. But I see you made a comment about all modified exhausts in WI are illegal. Is that true??? I am thinking about getting an HPD pipe for my Scrambler, but maybe I should check with the law first. Where did you find anything about that exhaust? I would really like to read more on that subject. Thanks.

that sounds right. my riden buddies have a grizzly and one used to have a sc500 4x4. the grizz tops out at in the high 50's to low 60's. The scrambler would simply smoke the griz on top end.....i was guessing about 74mph.

I think you are mistaken about the Grizzly's top speed. On the speedometer it say 70mph, and (like all Yamaha's)its got that little screw on the the handlebar that lets you unscrew it a little bit to make it go faster.I know that it will do eveybit of 70.
