A piston port motor does not have reeds. As the piston travels downwards the compression starts increasing in the crankcase. If windows were cut into the piston the pressure would be forced back into the carb which would create 2 problems and a motor that might idle but wouldnt want to run. Porting on these type of motors is also very critical. If someone was to lower the intake ports too far the same would happen.

It sounds like you are the type of person who wants to learn and do things himself. There is a book put out by A. Graham Bell called "Two Stroke Performance" that will discuss everything in detail about reed, piston, and rotary motors including do's and don'ts. Head squish, porting, carburetion, exhaust are all dicussed. You can buy it through Amazon for about $35. For a beginner (or even someone who's been doing it for awhile) it is an excellent source of info. Hope this helps,Bubba

Put simply..........more volume of air. Your motor is essentially an air pump. More volume= more hp. With reeds you can use ports in the piston, larger intake ports, and also auxilary ports in addition to the main intake ports. That makes more power, not to mention the low end response with reeds is much better due to keeping the charge contained in the bottom end where it should be.
