Default not your normal 500 KNOCK

alright, you have probably all heard of a scrambler 500 knocking at idle. so i ignored the knock mine made at idle. i have a 1999 scrambler 500, and just starting today i took it out for a ride and the motor started to bang not knock, BANG so i imedetly shut it off and put it away. what could cause this? its always knocked but NOT like this. i have always put the right oil in it and always changed the oil and maintained it. if you pull it over now with the pull start it will clink and clatter as each stroke goes up and down. any information on this toppic would be great

remove the clutch cover, then pull it over, see if the sound is coming from the clutches instead.

its more likely to come from the clutches than the motor. with the clutch cover on, it can easily sound like its a motor noise. if so, then the primary clutch might need a rebuild.

good luck!

Don't let the hp numbers fool you. Its all in how you get it to the ground. Clutching clutching clutching!

DITTO on what X said. But if you think it is in the clutch then take the primary (front clutch )off and start it.When the buttons in the primary are gone it will sound like a rod knock but it is alot cheaper to fix.

A worn clutch will knock at idle and the noise will go away as the engine speeds up.
