OK here are my thoughts. I've owned 500 Sportsman’s from 98 to 01 and both machines will lift the front wheels slightly in low range from a standing start on pavement
I disagree with this statement! I have an 01 Duse 500 that is not an H.O. model and can easily flip the machine if I am not careful. Wheelies in low are no problem. In High it will only slightly pull the fronts off the ground. Maybe I am lucky and got an unusually powerful model, who knows.

Magna29, I don't care if you agree with me or not that's your parogative. The fact is that both Sportsman’s I've owned would lift the front wheels a little in low range, Hi range no way. However it could be a matter of how you do it. I witnessed a 240 lb fellow on a HO do wheelies every time he left from a standing start. He managed this by kneeling on the seat and throwing his weight to the rear and jerking the bars. When I take off I'm sitting on the seat and pulling the bars as best I can.
We are talking about a quad that weighs almost 700 lbs. and it takes a lot of torque to get the front wheels off the ground. To me wheelies are not important but if they were I'd switch to a different quad altogether.

Magna29, if you read my post (which obviously you didn't) I never said you didn't wheelie, I only stated what my quad will do. If you quad wheeelies bully for you.

traildog there is not to much room under the seat (2000 sportsman 500) to increase the size of the inlet tube to the airbox, has anyone ever ran into this problem. I guess i could use flexable vacuum cleaner hose or somthing else.

The fellow that did this (if I remember correctly) used 2" ABS pipe, ran out of the right side of the airbox to the rear then up past the rear rack as a snorkel. He also snorkelled the clutch too. This was in 98 and my memory fails me as to the exact details.

I have had two 500 ho polarises ,a 01 and the 04.5 that I ride right now ,I have found that it is not easy to do a high gear wheelie on these machines do to the lack of power and I think you would need some major mods to accomplish this and would probably be cheaper to trade it in on a 800 if sit down wheelies are what you want, but the 500 can do high gear wheelies all you have to do is stand on the back of the seat and pull on the bars and it should come up ,I know mine does.
