Mudder 500,
Where are you in Michigan? If you are close to South Lyon you are more than welcome to come over and I will show you what to look for on the cam.

Just pull the top cover off the cylinder and then pull the rocker arm assembly off and you can see the cam from there. There are 3 lobes on the cam you should see. If the middle lobe is not identical to the 2 outside lobes you have found your problem. Hope this helps. By the way I hunt whitetails by Twin Lakes up there and my friends own the new hotel at Twin Lakes. This can not be to far from you by an hour or two.

Sgajan,
Did your friend check his cam yet? I will be putting this one back together this week. It is definitely the problem as comparing the new cam to the old. I have never seen anything that comes close to this in all the years I have been working on engines. Even if this guy changed the oil once a year this is not acceptable in my book. This machine was used to run back and forth between the sod cutters in the field and the house and never was it trail ridden. 2600 miles and the exaust lobe is completely gone.

No he hast been able too get to it..weve both been working longer hours lately. Hope yours goes well though. Im guessing that its the problem with his. It doesnt seem right though because he changed his oil religiously. But i guess the cam is junk in sportsmans. Let me know if it works rungunner.

my 2001 polaris sptsman 500 runs just fine until it reaches a certain temp level, then it sputters, and completely shuts down like it runs out of fuel. the fan does come on, like it is cooling, but it still chokes down. after it cools back down, sometimes 30 minutes to an hour later, it will crank back up and run fine. could this have anything to do with the fuel pump, the cooling fan, fuel vapor lock?? has anyone else had this problem? if so i would appreciate any help/advice you can give. thanks!!
