Default ? about polaris cooling fan thermostat

I'm working on a 1995 polaris 300 4x4. Does the cooling fan thermostat screw into anything or does it just hang from the 2 wires that are hooked to it. I noticed the thermostat was broken and not hooked to anything while I was servicing the carb, the thermostat was broken in half and dangling from the wires. The other half is a mystery. The new thermostat has a threaded stud on it and I cant seem to find where it screws into on the motor or head. Any help would be appreciated.
I have pics of what I'm working on but dont know how to post them up on this forum.
Thanx guys

It has to be attached to transfer heat. If it were to just hang in open air or just lay on a surface, it would be ineffective.
