Default 1992 Trailboss 250 intermittent spark

My friend owns a 1992 Trailboss 250. It's been a great quad for years now. Unfortunately, it just recently started having problems producing a constant spark. Some days it will start fine, but then other days it won't start at all. When checking the spark, it either has a very weak spark, or none at all.

So far he's replaced a number of electrical items on it, including the CDI, all coils(including ignition), and the ignition switch. I told him that I would try to track down the problem for him, but figured I'd ask on here and see if anyone would have any ideas or suggestions as to what I should be looking for in regards to this problem. My first guess is a possible short somewhere in the wiring, but I won't know until I get a chance to look at it......

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Did you try replacing the spark plug cap these have a resistor in them and sometimes they short out and give you intermittent spark trouble. ---Hydro

I agree.......try a new spark plug wire and boot. But first......and I hope he tried this......but a new spark plug would help too........

Thanks for the advice. I'll have to look into the spark plug cap and see if he tried replacing that.

Another quick question though. Is this particular spark plug cap needed, or can I use a plain cap without a resistor? Does this resistor serve a specific purpose, like the 'resistor sparkplugs' used in snowmobiles to cut down on radio and television interference in residential areas?
