Need Help: Carb Removed & Screws Unmovable
#1
I attempted to change my main jet last night on my 05 Pred. Problem is I have virtually no tool that will fit under the carb to losen the bowl screws without stripping them. I keep taking parts off and disconnecting stuff trying to free up the space but so far its a no go.
Then I had the idea to take the whole carb off, but to get at the two brass screws I thought I just needed to remove the gas tank. WRONG! I still cant get at the brass screws, there just isnt enough room.
My buddy with an 2000 DS620 also runs a 42mm Mikuni carb and he said there should be another clamp fitting which I could losen without messing with the brass bolts???

I'm not entirely sure about what you are talking about in some parts of your topic.......but to change jets, you need to remove the front plastic and gas tank(shut gas off)...and then take a long screwdriver and loosen the clamp that holds the carb onto the motor.(after removing the airbox too)....pull the carb off the motor and turn unside down. To remove the screws, use vice grips with caution.....

Yes, the screws. I CANT GET THEM OUT!!!
I was hearing about something called an "impact driver" which is supposed to help. One of them is almost stripped, I was thinking im going to have to bust out the dremel and turn it from a philps to a flathead THEN try to get it out.
I got a buddy here at work with every tool known to man, but I wasnt too sure on disconnecting the throttle and choke cable and messing something up.
So i am open to ideas.
(how big vise grips? I tried a pair of needle nose vise grips and they just slipped off.)

Had the same prob with mine when I went to change jets. Before they broke off (thought that was going to happen) I got the dremmel tool and cut a deeper groove into the screws. Do not use an impact driver for these screws. Basically you'd be taking a hammer to your carb. If the heads do twist off, get an easy out. You drill into the screw and insert a tool the will twist it out. At the very worst, you might have to re-tap the screws to a larger size (shouldn't happen, but...). With the impact you run the risk of actually breaking the body of the carb. If you can find them, replace the screws with steel, not the brass that's causing all the problems now.

I've always been able to just use normal vice grips to get them out.......remember to just take your time, and watch for slipping. If the grips don't work, take your dremel tool, and cut a slot for a strait screwdriver(just big enough, so it fits tight).....and then you should get them out.
Once you get them out, go to Lowe's or maybe Home Depot, and get some of the same thread(not exactly sure on what they are....some metric thread).....that are alan bolts.....much easier.

my favorite method as of late is using my dewalt 14.4volt impact drill driver,,,,,,I set the clutch at 1,,,and it taps it out slowly and effortlessly
or you can try small vise grips
or last resort,,,,drill them

I tried small vise grips. I thought about the dremel idea.
I was going to get some hex type stainless steel cap screws to replace the ones in there.
How about big vise grips?
