Default 2000 sportsman 500/cooling

Hey folks! I have a 2000 sportsman 500 RSE that I bought as a repo. I'm slowly working on some of the problems.
The first one is that it has a coolant leak on the bottom of the engine. There appears to be some type of drain hole(?)below the water pump in the block. The coolant is leaking from there. I have removed the impeller cover and everything appears to be ok there. The engine must come out to service the water pump. Any body have any ideas? Thanks

Sounds like the seal in the water pump is leaking. Click link for a parts breakdown of the water pump. Had it happen to my 02

Thanks for the link. I hate to sound dumb, but which seal is it? The schematic you sent shows the outer cover of the water pump impeller, but I think the actual water pump is inside the case?

#12. Your leak is out of the "weep hole" under side of the cover I take it. Dealer actually did mine.
The impeller #11 is actually the object that pumps the water. Kinda like a water fan.

Yep, that's where it is leaking from. According to a parts manual I printed off, it most likely is the "mechanical seal" and that is where the enging has to come out to crack the crankcase open to get it changed out. Do you mind me asking how much the dealer charged you for yours? I'm still thinking about attempting it myself.

Upnort is correct. Your problem is the mechanical water pump seal. It's a pretty cheap and easy fix. If you plan on changing it yourself, I would highly recommend that you either borrow or rent the required seal puller from your dealer. I'm sure at least 100 people in this forum will tell you it can be done without the puller, and they're correct. However, not being familiar with the process, you risk bending the water pump shaft, which the only way to replace is to crack the crankcase open. With the puller, the entire job should only take about 15 minutes and is easy enough for my wife to do....

Good luck.

Was like 80$ to do including parts. I did not want to risk bending shaft because of above reason. The "tool" whatever it is was 70-ish. Could try doing a search in the Polaris thread to see if can find more on it as it has been a fairly common problem.
