Default 2001 Polaris Sportsmans- Known Problems

Polaris ATV's ars still getting a bad rap (reliability) where I am from. Basically, everyone thinks Honda has the most reliable quads going and thats all you should buy. I personally think that the other manufacturers have caught up to Honda, and that they are all generally reliable ATV's. But because Polaris still has this bad rap here, their used prices are generally alot lower because they are harder to sell.

I know of a few 2001 Polaris Sportsman 500 4x4s that are selling for much cheaper than any Honda. My question is about known problems with this year Sportsman. What problems should I look out for with this year Sportsman?

Also, what has changed on the newer Sportsmans (besides looks) to improve them since 2001?

Thanks

Default 2001 Polaris Sportsmans- Known Problems?

I have approximately 10000miles on my 2001 and I have seen my share of issues. Most are small fixable issues. The first, two wires almost always break at the voltage regulator, fix the wires properly and everything works fine. Second, ground cables break easily(one going from engine to body), again easy fix. Third is speedometer wil eventually stop working, mine just did this year. My worst problem though, is clutches on these things. I've never had my belt slip, but the clutches need lots of maintenance to keep them performing good, especially if you do lots of miles like I do. I clean mine after everyride, took me three clutches two decide to do so. All these problems are also based on a 99sp500 that I had, same problems on both. So, I think these bikes are very reliable, keep them greased, change the oil and clean the clutch, and you will not see the end of these bikes, plus the ride and capability will make you never want to go get a honda ever again...
