Default 97 Sport 400 gearbox chain slipage

I recently picked up this used Sport 400. I noticed that the gearbox chain was slipping. I know its not anything uncommon for the chain to stretch and to start slipping. My question is.....what's the likelyhood that the sprockets may be worn out as well? Is the chain made of softer material than the sprockets thus wearing more on the chain rather than the sprockets? There is an awful lot of metal shaving on the dipstick magnet and in the oil itself.
The reason im asking is because if the sprockets are most likely worn out as well.....i will just ride it for all its worth.(sprockets arent cheap). If its just the chain ill replace it ASAP.
Thanks.

Pulll the tranny and replace the chain. It isnt that hard and chances are that is all it will need. But get you a service manual first.

I have never seen the sprokets wear out. Replace the chain NOW and most likely that is all you will have to do.

After you get it done fill the trans with Castrol Syntec 5w50 and you will never have to mess with it again.
