Default Overheating Sportsman

Finally had my first problem with my 04.5 SP500. While plowing yesterday (low speed low range high rpm's occasionally), it began to overheat and blow out of the overflow chamber. The fan didnt come on, I jumped it and it works fine powered by a 12V battery.

Now while doing further diagnosing today, the HOT indicator lights up when the ATV is cold, right after it was started but it doesnt seem to be sending power to the fan. What controls the fan, the computer? Is this an easy fix?

Thanks in advance.

John

The temp sensor is bad. I have seen this alot on the sp's. It is easy to fix and not expensive.

Sigarms,

Where in PA are you located? We are allways looking to expand the riding group.

Maytown, Lancaster County, not too far from you. You can email me at jstapf@yahoo.com

Also, thanks for the info about the temp sensor, I'll look into replacing it.

it wasnt the sensor on mine.. it was a relay that i fried when it got zapped while winching.. unplug the switch though and if the fan comes on (default is on) its the switch.. if it doesnt its probably the 90 dollar relay i just replaced.

thermal temp switch.. its located on the left side.. right of the coolant res. its just a clip plug.. unplug it and turn the key on.. if the fan starts its the switch.. if it doesnt its something else like the relay.

My 700 Sportsman is overheating as well but the fan acts like it wants to come on but its hesitating like its not getting the proper fire to it or something. I hate to go buy a brand new fan and it be a relay or a sensor of some kind.

Ok, I unplugged the switch and the fan came on. But let me ask this, if its a simple switch for the fan that isnt coming on, then why is my display flashing "hot". Is the sensor bad too?
