new scrambler
#1
hi i just purchased a 2002 scrambler on ebay. i am going to pick it up on sat. anything i should look for specificly. the guy said it had the 4wd fixed awhile back. i understand that they had problems with them. it is all stock 2 stroke, scrambler x. anyone know the difference between the x and the regular? also wondering where the best place to get a plow. do they make a conversion kit to convert front/rear hand brake to just a front brake. sorry for the questions but im new and could really use some help. thanks

i would try looking at www.hpd-inc.com for yoru scrambler parts www.hotseatperformance.com aswell
good luck with your scrambler, the 2-stroke varients are awesome! i would check to see that all the axles are in good shape, and the struts, and the bearing housing. good luck!

The difference in the X and regular is the color, graphics, alluminum wheels and other lighter weight parts. The 400 4x4 is a great trail machine and with a plow set up you can plow a decent amount of snow like 3-4 inches without any problem. You go for 6in and up you may hurt your belt.

i would check compression first with a good guage, then make sure the piston is well sealed and well shaped.take a look at the oil injection as
to known what oil is there also, drain the counter balance oil
right before and put new oil in it,but check for wear out possibly
in there also.cylinder studs, change cooling system as well too...
the list goes on,there alot of thing you gonna inspect with more riding
time, but the motor thing are essential to be sure on a used quad, happy
riding.

My rear shock and stearing column bushings went on my 2000. there will be play in the handle bars if so on the bushings. Also check the a-arms bushings for play and check the boots in front axles for tears. Cheak for a water leak out of the engine. You will probably need a new battery if its the orginal. Obviously your going to want to change the spark plug and airfilter. Is it all stock or has it been modified. that will make a difference too.

thanks for all the replies. i already bought the machine on ebay. but im gonna give it a good once over before i take it home. i just wanted to know if there are any common problem areas that i should look for. the only thing that concerns me is the transmissions on these things cause i dont know much about them. i got the machine for 2200 and it is stock and appears to be in great shape.we'll see tomorrow i guess.

one of the first things i would recommend you do is check and replace the oil injection spring, some models allow water to enter the oil inj. area via the cable (they use the same cable for the throttle and the oil injection) if this spring gets rusty, it will break and you may have engine failure. i know first hand. check for engine coolant leaks and get the engine warm and up to running temp. run the bike and see how the clutches respond. other then that listen for death rattles.

About the brake handle there are conversions for that. It will turn it into a two handled braking system with one handle being fronts and the other rears. You can get a kit from rick ritter and probably from some other places. It costs $140 for rick and while I have never personally dealt with him, I have heard nothing but great reviews about him so I wouldn't hesitate to buy from him. I have never seen them anywhere else but somebody else probably would have a kit you would just have to search for it.

You got a nice bike. But I don't know if you got a good plow bike. Check out Kimpex plows, that's what I have. I bought a Kimpex click and go, and it is awesome. I have a 250, but it has low range, I would be in BIG trouble if I didn't have 4x4. Good luck. . .
