Default scrambler problem, what do u think?

So i was out with my brother driving two of our scramblers in the snow and they were both runnning perfectly fine all day long until at night my 96 400 scrambler just stalled on my brother. Earlier we needed to use the pull start to start it because we ran the battery low with the headlights. When it stalled and we tried to start it it just clicked, so then i tried to use the pull start and the pull start was locked tight and wouldn't pull out. I thought maybe something is ceased but the rear tires would turn when in gear so i don't know what it is. Does anyone out there have any idea. I like to search here before i take her to the dealership.

thanks for any input

The 400 apparently died because of the using of the lights with a battery that was in poor condition. From riding in the snow, water entered your recoil assembly and froze, thereby locking up the pull start.

There is nothing wrong with your engine.

that would be great if thats the problem. Do you think if it sits in a garage for a over night in the morning it should be good again? Any other ideas if that isn't the problem. (hopefully it is)

That depends on how warm the garage is.

You have to remove your recoil assy to remove all water. Even the recoil rope needs to be dried, or that problem may reoccur.

You could do a search for "recoil" to read more specific threads on this.

if im not mistaken the 400's also have a recoil drain on the bottom of the engine. it is on the bottom of the recoil assembly, like a 5/8 or 11/16 bolt.

mine acted similiar when my poston skirt broke off. the 400's are also really prone to this. if you didn;t get a wiseco on the 96 I would think this could be it.

never heard of the recoil freezing but then again im in florida. =-)

In his first post, he said that he could turn the rear wheels with it in gear.

Default scrambler problem, what do u think?

i just took off the clutch's cover and also the other side were the pull start is. It is deffinately something internal. Both the primary clutch and the other side, the one the pull start grabs are as stiff as steel. I tried rolling it with the covers off to see what happens and basicley the belt just slips over the one clutch allowing it to move.

Looks like this might be a harry one!!!! Any ideas or places i should start? Can blowing apiston cause this to happen or would it be something like my oil pump stopping and cuasing the engine to sieze?

Thanks for any help?

My mistake! I assumed that he had a manual trans.
