Default Polaris Reliability???

Thanks for all your great advice. I stopped by the local dealer today and rode a couple of machines.

1-06 Wolvy 450
2-06 SP450
3-06 Hawkeye

I think all were great in their own regard.

The Wolvy was by far smaller than the SP450 and alot snappier. It definately did not ride as smooth.

The SP450 was a cadillac. Very smooth and had splenty of power.

The Hawkeye was interesting. Super low gearing in the beginning of the accelation. Smooth ride and easy to handle because of the size. Seemed like a fine machine for what it is.

Let me run some pricing by you...let me know what you think.

SP450 $5916
Hawkeye $4527
Wolvy $5718

Is there a difference other than 50cc between the 450SP and a 500SP? Not looking at the EFI model.

I looked at a couple of the wholesale places online and they beat these prices considerably but it's a days drive to Tennessee to pick them up.

I don't think those prices are good, they are not far from invoice, however, they are all new machines and don't necessarily need discounting to sell. I just noticed that the 500 H.O. doesn't come with EBS standard anymore so the extra $400 only gets you 44 more cc's and a 40 mikuni instead of a 34. the 500 has been around for a while though unlike the first year 450. I think for the long term a Sportsman would offer you the most versatility out of your choices, it excels at both play and work. if you are more interested in play you may want to consider the Scrambler. 2005 down in Tenn. for $4883!

what kind of riding do you mostly do?

Engine Braking System. without it the machine freewheels during deceleration. with a gear tranny engine compression slows the bike down when you let off the throttle while in gear, a CVT/belt tranny needs a mechanism in place to take advantage of engine compression during deceleration, otherwise there is no tension on the belt, hence the freewheeling. the Polaris EBS is done through mechanical clutching on the higher end models but not on the 450 and 500 carb, it's an accessory. don't get me wrong, the hydraulic brakes work great, but I feel more comfortable with the additional engine braking. I wouldn't own a Polaris without it.

Interesting. I would have assumed this would be a standard feature. I mainly ride for fun. I currently own a DS650.

I'm comparing prices to some of the other dealers such as Abernathys, SouthernHonda and Southerpowersports and I see that the prices are too high at my dealer. I don't know if they'll match the others prices or not. The offer I put on the table was that I'd buy the SP450 and the hawkeye and trade the DS but he'll only give me 3100 for the DS. I be happier with 4000.

should be imo, but Polaris has another strategy, it's called MARKETING. they're hoping you will spend extra on a better equipped model. same as all the auto makers do.

a local dealer should at least come close to those good prices offered down south. they can always screw the next guy to make up for it. you never make out by trading in, it is always a loss. the dealer has to sell the trade so can only give the buyer so much to be able to make a profit. trading is convenient, but only works in the dealers favor. sell your machine out right even if you don't get what you think it is worth it will most likely be more than the dealer will give you and you will have the cash in hand, REAL MONEY. ask the dealer what he will give you on trade for you machine, bet you won't get a straight answer, he will say it depends on what you buy. if he does give you a figure, ask him to write you a check for that amount, see what happens. when you trade the dealer just plays with the numbers to make you think you aren't getting porked, but make no mistake, they will screw you. it all comes down to your desire for a different/new machine, how bad you want it and how much money you are willing to lose. buying an ATV is always a loss to some degree, but they are fun, and fun is good. however, there is no sense in wasting money if you don't have to.

sell your machine yourself, even if you only get $3,500, you are going into the dealer with cash in hand and more able to get a discount on a new machine. makes for a more simple transaction.

It's definately a numbers game.

If the dealer comes up money on the trade or matches the other dealers then it's just same as getting 4000 grand for the bike on trade in. I can always buy just one quad.

I understand the 450 is new this year but isn't it the same quad as the 400? Any idea how much the ebs addition would be?
