I have an oil question
#2
I just use the Polaris stuff. I don't want to kick myself if I screw something up. There are alot of very ATV smart people on this site. You might want to put on your title: I have an oil question? That way people don't just skip over your post. I seem to get alot more responses when I'm specific. Good luck.

I use 0w40 Mobil 1 only ($5.49). Especially in the winter. No need for 4 stroke wet clutch high priced oil here.

You can use Amsoil Series 2000 Chaincase lube. It works GREAT as a substitute to the Polaris AGL fluid. that is the only susbtitute I know of , its not auto trans fluid although it is thin.
see below from another post...
"What you refer to as an automatic transmission is not. The Polaris has a belt driven "automatic" with a drive clutch (on the engine) and a driven clutch (on the input to the gearbox) and a belt in between. It is the gearbox that you are referring to. The gearbox does no gear shifting at all, other than when you switch from forward to reverse or to low. It is simply a transfer case of sorts that gets power from the clutch system to the rear wheels. It consists of a bunch of gears, sprockets and chains. The belt and 2 clutches do all the "gear shifting".
Do not use ATF in the gear box. There is nothing hydraulic about the gearbox. It requires a good quality synthetic gear lube. Personally, for the quantity required and the infrequent changes required, I use the synthetic offering from Polaris. Others here do use other products with no problems. I am sure someone will be kind enough to provide info on other products. My vote, us the Polaris stuff! -DJ "

I completly understand how the drive train works on the polaris models. The reason why I refer it as a transmission, is because that is how Polaris states it in all there books and manuals. just thought you would want to know. Keep in mind my bike is 2000 the drive train is not like the newer models.

Sorry I didn't mean to imply you don't know, just passing on info.
I didn't take into consideration the year of your machine and I have a 2000 model (Scrambler) and I think it takes other that the AGL fluid but its still not Auto Trans fluid such as in cars. It may be gearcase lube. I can't remember for sure and I don’t have the manuals with me.

Thats one thing I like about the newer Polaris bikes, the gearcase is a hell of alot smaller than the older models, I must be pulling around an extra 25 pounds more that a newer 500 sp.

My 2000 scr400 trans takes the PPS, Polaris Premium Synthetic gear case oil (11 oz./ 325 ml).
The 4x4 of the same model takes 27 or 32 oz., the manual contridicts itself.
My 2002 sp700 trans takes the AGL, which just went up to $14 a qt!

It works GREAT as a substitute to the Polaris AGL fluid. But it is the only one i know of.
I know the trans in diff models and years use different fliuds!???? AGL, PPS etc.??
Any other insight, i know a lot of other fluids have been used by others APPARENTLY w/o problems, but i wonder.
