Default Scrambler 400 Dying

Well, I have had IT! four hours and $50 bucks in parts and still the thing wont stay running....It will idle and run around the yard at med to full throttle10-15 min and be fine. I take it out on the road for a wide open run and I'll get approx 1/8 mile down the troad and the thing will start to sound like its running out of gas. I'll slow down while feathering the throttle and trying to keep it running. Sometimes it will clear itself up but most of the time I have to re-start ir by full choke to get it going again and it runs perfect until I do a wide open run for a while and it will start over again. I replaced the plug (twice) the air filter, needle and seat, took the carb apart ,cleanedand checked the floats (they appear to be sliding on their shafts fine) checked the Emergency thumb throttle shut off thing and adjusted the cable to take up all the slack to eliminate that!

Please help!

Brent.

Sound like ur vent line might be plugged or blocked.

Do a test run with with gas cap loose and see if that helps in length of running time at throttle.

Or find ur vent line and blow back on it to see if it is clear.

sounds like you to me you need a new carbareutor. I had the same problem with a 250r i had. I did everything you did and the I got a new carb and the problem solved. My guess is when you cleaned the carb it wasnt put together right or something is broke in it. It sounds like the float bowl fills up with fuel but once it runs out it doesnt have the vacum to give it the correct fuel or the float is set to low. Best bet is to buy a new carb and go from there.

Check your float levels. Do you have enough gas flow to the carb? Check for kinks in the fuel line. A pinched or blocked vent line could also do it. try it on reserve, or on. switch what you are doing now. Is the tank full? If there is only a small amount of gas and you are on it hard the fuel can go to the back of the tank and stop flow. It would be like you are out of gas. What ever the case it sounds more like a flow problem rather than a carb issue. Only thing in the carb that could effect flow is the needle valve, which is controled by the floats, which is set by arm the needle valve rides on. Do make sure the carb vents are not blocked. Last but not least, Is it possible you have a small crankcase or intake leak? Not likely but if so it would be sucking air through the leak instead of the carb. If it idles ok it most likely is not that.

Sounds like a carb problem. I had the same problem out of one of my dirtbikes and i had to rebuild the carb and drain the gas tanks and the lines.

Well thanks for the replies and extra ideas for me to look into. I just checked the gas tank vent line and it is clear. I'm going to rip her all apart again and check/re-clean and re-assemble the carb/fuel system once again...Hopefully I missed something the first time and I find it.

I thought more about it and it wasn't anywhere near an 1/8 mile until it ran out of gas...It was more like 150-200yards!

Until next update.

Well I just got done removing cleaning /double and triple checking everything I could think of when I had the carb apart.. Everything appears to be OK. I'm going to go get another fuel filter tomorrow because they gave me one that was to small the first time. I'm getting good flow throught the one that is on the quad but it is a shot in the dark that I'm guessing maybe it isn't giving complete flow and the bowl can't stay full???

It's getting bad now...I'm guessing!

Hey Brent,
I'm not sure if this is the same for the two stroke, but the four stroke Scram has a vacuum pulsing fuel pump in line. If that gets screwed up then it will stop the flow of fuel. Check the vacuum line from the carb and to the pump. Check for loosness and cracks in line. If all is good, then your pump might not be working right. One test you can do is run the fuel line strait from the petcock to the carb. They do sell rebuild kits for the fuel pump. I hope this is helpfull. Like I said, I'm not sure if the two stroke uses this setup.

I had the same problem it would want to die on me at full throttle so I took the float bowl off and i raised the floats about a 1/16 of an inch and it runs perfect. Don't go anymore b/c then it will start dripping out of the overflow
