Got new silent chain now when hit the throttle the motor dies :(
#1
Hey everybody, I have a 1997 polaris Magnum that is in the shop and just got a new silent and 4wd chain in it. He got everything back together and it starts great and before it get's warm it runs pretty good. But after a while when you hit the throttle he said it sound like it is running way rich, it just wants to die?
Anybody got any ideas on that one. The machine idols great but as soon as he gives it juice it sputters out.
Please help.
Thanks all.

The guy working on it mentioned that if he takes the air box off he can give it gas without it dying, what does that mean? He puts it back on hit's the throttle and it dies. Carb has been checked valves have been checked, now he is looking at electrical, he said the battery is in good shape. Is there anything that he could have screwed up while taking the tranny off and putting it back on with the new silent and 4x4 chain that could have caused something like this?? Now he is trying to tell me there is a chance it's a high voltage problem because I have a winch on there, even though it ran fine when I brought it to him and unless he was running the winch up and down it shouldn't make a bit of difference. Please help, I would hate to get screwed by this guy.
Thanks in advance for any clues on this one.

Check the etc(electronic throttle control) adjustment on the throttle.
Too much play in the cable will cause a "misfire" problem.
Listen careful and if you can hear a switch "click" as you pull the throttle off idle you need to adjust it.
The way it works is the reverse speed limiter is tied to the throttle so if the throttle cable sticks and you let off, it will "limit"(some times kill) the engine.
Read your owners manuel to adjust.
Hope this helps

the labor for this guy is $30/hour I know what you are thinking, he's a hack but he had some good refences he just wanted to go into business for himself and it's a bit of a drive to get to his shop so he charges less then the big guys. Hopefully he will come through with something, so far he has been very honest and strait forward about the issue and he knows it ran when it got there so hopefully he will stick to that.

Sounds to me like it's too rich too, have you checked the float bowel level? Is the float bowel needle valve leaking causing a high level? If it runs with the lid off it's too rich.

Okay, I will check out the float. He did call me yesterday and mention the cam. Is that something that can happen when you replace the silent and 4x4 chain at the same time. I am not a mechanic so I am just looking for some techincal help on this one. Just trying to think logically on the situation, that should be the only thing that has changed, is those two chains.
Thanks again to everyone for your helpful suggestions.

mtpockets please refrain from posting on this thread if you can't control yourself from making comments that have nothing to do with the situation. I see that you are a pro-rider and that gives me the impression that you may have something worth while to post but I notice that you feel you can just talk smack instead of contributing anything worth while. I hope your other 2132 posts were more insightful.
