Default Scrambler Tranny-- How much HP can they take?

I am looking into trading my Banshee for a custom Scrambler. The quad has a 670 Ski-Doo motor in it. This motor is capable of over 120HP EASY. The guy has it de-tuned to 85 HP right now in fear the tranny could not handle more HP than that. THIS IS THE 4X4. The 4x4 is still working and in tact.

So do I keep it at the 85HP or can it handle more?

85-90hp is about the max you'd ever get out of the scrambler 400/416 motor, and those guys are still running the stock tranny. I don't think I'd go much above what you have it at.

i don't want to fade your joy here, but i heard very potent story
and terrible story about custom made quads,it seem anything over 100 hp
especially on an auto tranny quad will blast the gearcase right up
in a few hours, the sprockets are the most subject to wear out faster than
any quad then,i wouldn't build pass 75 to 85 hp on this tranny.

I have a 600cc snowmobile engine on my 400 sport. Check my pictures. I run the PVT drive through a jackshaft to the original 1998 transmission. I have not had any problem with the tranny so far. I would guess I have over 25 hours running time on the set up. I am heading for Glamis with it next week and will give it the ultimate test for six days. I will let you know if it gives up th ghost. I don't know it as a fact but with the high performance pipes I have been told I have over 100 hp at 9500 rpm.

The 2wd tranny has chain driven foward gear, whereas the 4x4 trans has a "gear to gear" foward gear. So, it stands to reason that the 4x4 tranny should take more power. If it were me, Id have to give it a try.
Worst it can do is break! LOL

Thanks for the replies guys. I am deffinetly looking forward to getting this thing and seeing what I can do with it. Once I get the quad I can look into what kind of things I can do. Thinking maybe run a tranny cooler with a pump or something. Dunno, just an idea.

Pennyless, deffinatly looking forward to hearing how yours turns out. I think mine is done in a different style of approach. when you get back, let me know and I will hopefully have alot more pics of how it is assembled and we can compare some notes.

I found out that the 670 rated STOCK is at 130HP. My wifes Summit 670 we figure to be in the 150hp range. So it has huge potential, thats for sure.

I want a reliable, but head turning quad. I think I might have found her!

Found out a few more things on this quad. It has custom cut to fit Team clutching. Runs with dual radiators with electric fan (maybe fans?).

Been mulling over the tranny issue and it seams like we have a few ideas. Were thinking of taking the tranny out and having the gears cryotreated and upgrading the bearings or anything else we might see. Also going to run a Blue Marble additive that drasitcly reduces friction thus reducing your running temps. If that isnt enough then we might add a Tanns cooler with a pump to significantly add Trans fluid volume pluss the benifit of a cooler.

Getting pretty excited about this thing. Just waiting for the guy that has it to get back from vacation to get the rest of the info and some pictures of it.

Does it come with a 5 point harness? Man that should be a ride and a half if you run the engine at its max HP.

I don't think it will be so much of your tranny overheating(that will eventually be a problem too though), but more like the sheer power you'll be putting on the tranny at WOT......I just think it will give up on ya.....I'm willing to be you'll just round the gears off, or stretch/break the chain, etc.....but you can always try it I guess.....
