Default Speedo Needle on 2004 Sportsman 700

I just got back from riding, and unfortunately flipped my quad over. Nothing appears wrong with it, but it looks like my speedo needle popped out of the hole. Is it possible to unscrew the lense and put the needle back in there, or am I look at a whole new speedo?

Thanks!

Good question. With all the internal moisture problems Polaris had with the earlier speedos it’s my guess the VDO gauge is a sealed unit but I’ve never tried to take one apart. Give it a twist and see what happens.

OK, I was just curious if anyone has tried before. I tried to give it a quick spin and the whole unit rotates. I'm going to let the mud on it dry a bit, and I'll start on my repairs tomorrow. I think I will need to pop the headlight assembly apart so I can hold the back of the unit and try to unscrew the lense.

I'll post my results for the next unlucky person to see in a search.

Thanks!

You can just pull straight out on the speedo and it will come out of the pod without taking the pod apart. If its messed up I would try to fix it first before you buy another speedo. Its done broke so you don't have much to lose.

You can not remove the lens from the speedo to reattach the needle. The lens is either glued or ultrasonic welded to the housing.

Damn it! That's what I was afraid of. Well looks like I'll be ordering a new speedo.

Everytime I go riding I have to order some type of part that I broke while out. I think I need to calm down before I either go broke buying parts or kill myself.

How much do you want for the broken one? Mine is all messed up and the 4 wheel drive doesn't work. I don't care about the needle. I just want the 4-wheel drive to work.

Ordinarily I'd agree with you and give it a try. Like you say I have nothing to loose except having to buy a new one, which I will probably have to do anyway. If the unit is truly sealed, I'd rather just get a new one than have to deal with possible problems down the road. I will probably take the unit out today and inspect it. I'll find out what a new one costs on Tuesday.

I'll let you know what happens here in the next day or so. I don't think I'm going to attempt to open it up, so it may make a nice unit for someone who doesn't care about their speed.
