I have never owned a polaris before, finally took the plunge and traded my sport quad in on a 04 600 sportsman. The ride of the sport quad was starting to take a toll on my body.I know the polaris rides good.Has anybody taken off the stabilizer on the independent rear suspension, and set the shocks a little stiffer,or does this hurt the stability of the machine. Are the valves self-adjusting on the 600 motor.I noticed when you first take off engagement of the clutch is a little slow,is this normal. Also do the newer polarises still have the front hubs where you still have to use oil in them. Are there any grease fittings on these machines. What kind of life are these motors capable of if taken care of.Sorry so many questions, just curious.Any replies appreciated.Thanks.

Congratulations on your purchase and welcome. The slow enguagement and "clunk" if you haven't noticed can be inexpensibly fixed with a Dalton Industries Primary clutch spring... Check out www.daltonindustries.com. Guys on this forum have installed a quick disconnect to the rear sway bar for serious rock crawling and etc..., but it will roll over a little more in the corners at speed then. The sp600/700/800 twins all use hydraulic (self adjusting) lifters. The engine is a single cam, push-rod overhead valve engine, much like an old 350 chevrolet v-8... no adjustment necessary. I've pounded a lot of hard miles on these twins and they've never let me down. The only grease fittings on your sp600 are on the front lower ball-joints, and on the slip joint of the front drive shaft accessed near the foot brake lever. the front hubs have sealed bearings-no oil in them. the clutch for awd is in the front differential now. Many upgrades are availible for your 600... like: install the sp800 exhaust header pipe, air intake snorkle. K&n air filter, check to see if the polaris cold start update has been performed on the carb., (helps cold start/driveability). Some like the heelcliker clutches... you can Install th sp800 primary clutch... the list goes on......... Hope this helps, Dan.

Look at my site for the swaybar disconnect.

The update came out in early '04, it consists of new jets and a new slide valve spring. It was only recommended for atv's in climates where the temps drop below 40 deg. or something.... But mine was cold blooded below 60! I had to warm it up for a few minutes before riding it or it would pop and back fire and not run unless the choke was partly on. I think the later production '04's might have come that way... but I'm not sure. There is a polaris service bulletin for this. You can do a search on this forum for it though. Dano.

Vance, your Polaris dealer can punch in the VIN# of your quad to see if the cold start update has been done at the factory. The carb update improves throttle response and performance at any temperature.
