2003 trailboss knocking/tapping sound
#1
My wife's 2003 trailboss 330 has a knocking or tapping sound when the engine is idling. As soon as you give it some throttle, the knocking noise goes away.
Not sure if it related, but a few months ago while riding the quad just shut down. Turns out that an opportunistic stick punctured her oil hose. All of the oil leaked out and the low oil sensor shut off the engine. She only went about 100 yards from where we think the pucture occurred.
Any thoughts on this tapping sound?
THanks,
Rob

I have the same Boss and beleave you can search my topics and find the same question.
The answer most likely is that it's OK. I used the same term "knocking", in describing mine just after purchase. Infact, mine is a little louder when just cold and quiets almost all the way down when hot. It's a deep hollow low decibel knock like you hear on a diesel. Never had a problem with it. I'm glad to hear they have a low oil sensor shut off; didn't know that.
Anyway I forget what the Forum boys said but it was not to worry. Now I remember the dealer said it was normal and I even insisted the Fac. Rep listen to it and was told it was normal. It has done it since day one but not every single time.
Now you say a "knocking or a tapping"? I doubt your valves need adjustment? Polaris is generally a noisy engine from the much reading I have done. Heck, mine may be tapping too and I haven't given it another thought. It's a good four stroke, and when maintained should last a very long time, I'm sure yours will too.
Start one up at the dealer and take a listen. Eventually I'll take mine in and get the valves checked and I bet they'll be just fine with no adj. needed. On the engine part anyway, I just change the oil, keep air filter clean, inspect engine close for leacks and problems, warm it up good and once a year change the plug. I ride it very hard and all is well.
Please let me know what you here, and good luck to you - you chose well.

First thing I would check is the primary clutch for wear.To do this take the clutch cover and belt off and pull the front clutch. Then start the motor and see if the noise goes away.If it does take the clutch to a shop and have new buttons (or have it rebuilt) put in.
If it still ticks set the valves. Now it is still ticks it could just be part of IT.

I would check the valves regardless. That's something that gets ignored after break in, and they tend to tighten a bit. My 325 (same motor as 330) has made that noise for six years now. Still running strong. But, keep an ear out for changes in the noise.

I've been gone for the weekend and just got back to read the good replies, including a review of my own to this thread. Good info all.
And boy does my spelling suck! Thank God this one took no math.
