Default 2006 500EFI Stall update...

Yesterday my 2006 500EFI stalled two times in about a 15-20 min ride around my property. This has been happening since I bought it in November 2005, with one hour on it. Polaris has been trying (I think) to fix the problem. I've had it in the shop several times totaling around 60 days of shop time and still no fix. Only one dealer has been able to make it stall, and that was right in front of me. that dealer called Polaris and they said they knew about the stall problem with the 500EFI but didn't have a fix for it yet, to hold tight. I spoke with a rep who said to bring it in to another dealer, so I did. This happened a couple of times. All the others dealers said they can only get it dip in RPM's and almost stall but not stall. The Polaris rep sounds like he doesn't believe me or something. Anyway, yesterday I had my wife video tape me coming to a stop and it did stall, (On video). So now when I go to court, they can't say I'm full of it. I have a quad with about 27 hrs and 50 miles on it, the tires are worn down from the dealers driving it around on the asphalt. I have mud in places I can't even get to because the last mechanic who worked on it said, "I rode it like I owned it" in the rain. One of the dealers used it as a shelf while it was stored out in the snow, and scratched my racks. Today the rep called me and said they want to try again to fix the problem. It's been five months and I need an ATV for the orchard on my property. I think I've given Polaris a fair chance to fix it. I picked up the court paperwork today.

Thanks for all your help through all this. I'm not trying to bash Polaris, I think It's just an isolated problem with a few 500EFI's. I understand Polaris doesn't want to give me a different 500EFI or my money back because it's a money thing. I hate to go through the court system but I have no other choice. I know all brands have their issues. Just my bad luck...

Default 2006 500EFI Stall update...

redmtn,

This is really crappy of Polaris to shelf this problem for so many 500 EFI owners. This problem is a serious issue. I've got the same problem w/my father-in-law's. I took his in to the dealer's about a month ago, they told me it was the ETC, and that it wasn't adjusted right. They undoubtedly adjusted it, because it didn't stall for quite a while. However, we went on a family ride this past Sunday, and the stalling returned. It almost seemed it might be heat related. I adjusted the ETC all over the place. Tightened it to the point the idle was running quite high, but still had the stalling. I adjusted it to where it should be (per the manual), still it stalls. The only thing I can think of is the problem resides somewhere passed the throttle. I'd think, the dealer would just start replacing parts until they solve the problem.

Obviously you haven't had this kind of experience w/any of the dealers you've taken yours to. I sincerely hope Polaris does right by you. You know, it seems there's enough documented cases of this problem, this could have the makings of a "class action" type suit...know what I mean? Since you've gotten the ball rolling, it might be worth while to ask you're lawyer about the possibility. This thing won't ever see a courtroom, regardless of how big it gets, but should gain the right attention to get Polaris to solve this problem, and perhaps get your 90 mile atv replaced w/one like you figured you'd bought originally.

Just an idea...I'm not bashing either, however deserving the company may be for seemingly ignoring the issue.

Just a quick question about the stalling. When it stalls, does the entire speedometer display screen go blank? I have an 05 700 efi that I flipped over backwards a few weeks back. Immidiately after the flip the bike would stall on any incline. As time has gone by the stalling is becoming less and less frequent but not restricted to just inclines anymore. My dealer told me it is likely the ETC as well. What I noticed however is that when I remove the cap and make the 2 contacts touch, the machine stalls but the LED display stays on. In the other cases I described the LED disappears when the bike stalls. Does that match what you see in the 06 500's? Any thoughts?

No, the display does not go dead when it stalls, it is only when I come to a stop. Most of the time, when I stop, the idle dips so low it diesels for a second, then either stalls or the idle picks up to normal. The other day, I started my quad and was letting it warm up, then I had to turn it off for a minute for a ups delivery, when I went back to start it, it wouldn't start. I had to give it throttle to get it started. I rode it around for a while, and guess what, it stalled! Court papers should be on there way to Polaris about now. I have enough of a paper trail to show Polaris was committing fraud. I'll keep you guys posted. Thanks for all your help.

Hey redmtd I have a 500 efi as well and I would like to know if you noticed if your atv is hard to shift sometimes. I think I know what is causing our problem. I took the belt cover off and found that the belt still turns at idle. I know it not out of line because I brought it in to get checked. I did notice that the secondary clutch seems not to let go of the belt when it should. That would cause it to stall. I put a little wd40 and seemed to work for a while and now it is back. I also found that it will stall if I slowdown without the brakes and if I hit the brakes real quick just before I stop it won't stall. It seems that if I hit the brakes the secondary clutch releases and all is well. Let me know what you think. You can pm me if you want. THNX.

Gates59, At the begining, it was hard to shift, but when they did the belt and engine alignment while trying to resolve the stall issue, they fixed the hard shifting. My atv seems to stall when I stop and the engine braking was activated. With the brakes being applied and just as it stops, it stalls. I know what you are saying, it does feel like something is not releasing just as you stop, causing the engine rpms to be pulled down. The last two mechanics checked the drive system, belt, ebs, clutching etc and said it's all good. I'm just going to wait and see what the court has to say in 20 days. I'm not a mechanic so I'm not going to mess with anything and screw something up. All I know is, it stalls and it shouldn't and Polaris can't fix it.

I was wondering what the court papers ask for. Are they asking for a replacement machine, money or is it more high level. Just curious as to how this process works
Thanks!

I am about to do the same thing here with the wifes Hawkeye. Since day one it has not ran properly, Due to jetting issues. I have ended up ordering in a jet kit and am trying different ones and setups myself. I would love to know how it turns out for you!!

This Issue may be more simple then you might think... instead of getting all technical check the injector... it may be slightly blocked and or defective

while your in there check out your spark plug see if its gapped correctly and spark energy and see if it is sparking properly
