Default Does this mean no recoil starter 500EFI?

I was reading my 2006 SP500 EFI Service Manual and noticed on page 10.21 that it says, "The Sportsman 500 EFI has incorporated into it's design a DC/ignition system. Operation Overview: The DC/ignition system relies on battery power for ignition, instead of generating DC voltage via flywheel magnetic induction, a 12 volt DC current is supplied directly from the battery to the PDM." DOES THIS MEAN, IF THE BATTERY IS COMPLETLY DEAD, THE RECOIL PULL START WILL NOT START THE QUAD?

Interesting question......but I would have to say no because that would completely eliminate the purpose for having a pull starter to begin with. My guess is that the system is wired such that when the battery is dead that it'll also accept juice from the stator to fire it up. But that is nothing more than speculation on my part and I'd be very interested to hear the facts......great question.

BTW.......several of my buddies have Grizzlies. They have pull starters but there is not a person on the planet that can pull start a Griz........hmmmm........I though that Jap machines are all so "refined"???

If your battery is "completely" dead, chances are, you will not be able to pull start the 500efi. The ECU needs 10 or 10.5V (I can't remember which) to turn on. If it doesn't turn on, the coil or injectors won't fire, and the engine won't start. Trying to pull start it will generate voltage from spinning the fly wheel, but it's unlikely you'll be able to spin it enough or fast enough to generate enough voltage to turn on the ECU.

It all depends how dead your battery is. Fuel injection has lots of benefits, but there are a couple negatives. This is one of them. Most CDIs on Polaris carb ATVs operate down to around 4.5V, that's why you can almost all ways pull start a carb, regardless of how dead the battery is.

I can start my quad with the recoil pull start real easy, I was just wondering if it would start with a dead battery. That's one of the reasons I got the 500 so if the battery died, I could use the pull start. Thanks for the responses...

O.K. now I have a question. I have the older 04.5 500ho carb. The battery went dead, and it wouldn't start with the pull start. If I hooked the battery charger to it then it would pull start, but as soon as I disconnected the charger it would stop running. Is this normal? Will they not run without a good battery? Dealer replaced battery and it's been fine.

Umm.. On my '04 SP 700 Carb, i dont have a pull start. I was a little concerned at first, but i've never had to use it. I'm definatly sure i dont have one, but if i did, where would it be?? Or did Spyder answer my question further up? I dont see any reason why you would have to a have a pull starter as an aftermarket accessory??

On my 2004 carburated 400 I have had a dead battery (because I left the lights on too long while the engine was off) and was able to pull start it easily on the first pull.
