If you are serious about hillclimbing, get the 4x4, it'll outclimb anything. Put a pipe and clutch kit on it and you'll have no trouble keeping up with 400ex's.

I have a 2X4 2001 and so far I love it.I am not broken in yet so I have not raced my riding buddy's 400EX.I think I can handle him though. The 2X4 should be quicker because of a significant difference in weight and drag.If you are an experienced ATV rider, you should be able to go most places that a 4X4 rider goes.If you can't,go around what they are trying to go over. The 2X4 fits the type of riding I like to due;fast woods, fairly smooth STEEP hillclimbing, duning.Good luck and enjoy whichever machine you choose. I just traded a 2x4 for a 4x4, Now I went from a Sport to a Utility, but I would have never traded my 99 Sport 400, if it were 4x4. It limited every ride I took, I ride alone alot, and I'd see a new trail I'd like to explore, but didn't want to take the chance of getting stuck. I've gotten stuck a couple of times that I know I could have gotten out of with a 4x4. And that 500lbs feels like a lot more in the middle of a cold field, with no help standing in mud and water. In short the 4x4 takes nothing away, and ads so much. You may never need it, but if you do only once, its worth the extra cost.
