I have developed a problem when running deep water (between top of tire and bottom of fender). This weekend she shut off in the middle of a river and when I got her on dry land I pulled the air box and there was water inside. I found that the clamp holding the rubber boot connecting the carb and the air box was not on correctly. I quickly fixed it, blew the water off the piston and off she went.

On the way back thru the same river, no problems. Later in the day I was crawling out of a water hole and she again shut off, BUT there was no water on the piston and none in the box. Hmmm. She fired up after a couple of stabs at the starter. The rest of the run back to the trailer was mostly puddles, but when I would go past 1/2 throttle she would bog out (almost as if she was starving for fuel) and almost stall. I switched to reserve and the same thing. This would happen even on the dry sections, but went away after a long (3 mile) "dry run".

Could it be an electrical problem (ie spark plug wire) and she is not getting enuf spark? I can't see it being water in the carb as none was evident after I fixed the problem?

Help guys . . . I hate being pulled out by Yamahas

Sounds like a problem I once had. My problem was a few drops of water in the float bowl. Try draining it, if you have not already done so.

Be sure you didn't get your air filter wet.

Hmmm . . . I did knock some water out of the airfilter. I must take it out and dry it. Would that explain what happened as I crawled out of the hole and she shut off. Again it was almost as if she starved for fuel. The bike's front wheels were on top of a ledge and the rears were 4 inches under water (it was almost covereing the rear fenders.

Loyal,
You are taking on water through the drain line off the bowl mof the carb. You need to plug it before riding in deep water. You may need to drain the carb several times to get all the moisture out. If you have done this many times, you may need to pull the bowl and clean it.

What I believe to be the carb bowl drain has a screw that is backed out a few turns to drain....how does moisture get in the bowl if the air box is dry and the screw is in???Not doubting you greg, just going through waterproofing my bike and trying to learn from you pros! Thanks!

It comes in thru the bowl vent tube, and thru the bowl drain tube... route the vent tube up high, and put a pinch clamp (a.k.a. clothes-pin) on the drain tube.

Dielectric grease in the spark plug boot will cure your problem if it is electrical. If it is fuel related, the other guys already gave you better advice than I ever could.

Hey MUDMACHINE,
I got my Recovery bottle snorkeled finally. I didnt want to drill a hole in the cap, so I thought about in for a few days. If you look at the pics I took in my photo album under "SNORKELS", I used a garden hose quick connect and ran 5/8" hosing up to my snorkels(quickly changed back to stock if needed). Mabey we can ride again after January?! Let me know, See ya.

It looks like mudmachine has answered your question. That drain tube serves 2 purposes. Manual drain and bowl overflow. the bowl overflow is where the water gets in.
