Got it - Adding oil may give me a false sense of security, but only adding more fuel will lower the combustion chamber temperature. I had leaned it out to maximum performance, but adding oil to too lean a mixture won't lower the temperature enough to keep me from seizing up again, next time I really open it up.
Thanks - you guys probably saved me another top end. And I appreciate the suggestions on the dial-a-jet, but we tried one on another bike, and I don't think it provided the wide-range of jetting I need (I'll be riding this weekend at 10K elevation, and going to the ocean to hit the dunes in 2 weeks)
And if you don't mind one last question - any suggestions on finding an egt gauge? I Googled it and found a million options - I'll see if Ritter carries one. Think I should have it, because I have a lot of opportunities to run the engine too lean.......
Thanks!
Dave

I bought a 2000 Scrambler a few years back and found out the hard way it had a seizing problem. Now I know why I got such a good deal.
It has the HPD and correct jetting. Turns out a piece of metal the size of a grain of salt would get stuck in the banjo bolt of the oil line right at the carb. It would run fine but if that piece of metal turned and blocked the port, BAM! It happened a few times until my local dealer tried helping me out because I was at a loss. They cut the banjo bolt in half and found the problem. They tried to get it covered under Polaris' good will program after the warranty was out but they wouldn't cover it.
Wait, is it sieze or seize? What happened to i before e except after c ?
