High end rev limiter 250 trailboss
#1
The RCR ported 250 goes to 7000 rpms then stops climbing. Rick says it's the pipe, the dealer thinks the cdi box is limiting the rpms. I'm making good HP, but if I can buy an ignition upgrade I'll look in to it.

Seeing how you probably have rick's pipe or hpd's Rick is probabaly right. Which ever pipe you do have probabaly won't spin over 7000 rpm. You should call rick or whom ever did your motor work the porting and pipe are probably matched to turn xxxx rpm. It always best to talk to who you got your parts from or who ever made them unless they don't know. But If I were you I'd give Rick a call your dealer has probably never even worked on a moded out 250 before.

Is the porting and pipe the only thing you've done to it?
I'm thinking if you had it ported, piped, bored and clutched, 7 grand would be screamin'.
Also, are you running on the stock front/rear sprockets? A simple change there can make a big change too.

The quad has a factory pipe off of a cyclone . Those machines out of the box spun up to 7000 rpm . The port timing on his cylinder is similar in the transfers , however I always did think the cyclone cylinders had way to much exhaust timing to be practical , so the exhaust port timing is a less than a cyclone cylinder .
I would reason that this being the case 7000 RPM would probably be about the end of the line for revs for the cylinder / pipe combo . I have never run one like this before , so , I can't really quote from experience on the setup .
I would tend to suspect the 7000 rpm wall is due to the pipe and porting rather then the ignition .
However if someone knows something about the ignition that I don't , I will gladly listen .

I've been in contact with Rick, this came up at the dealer when I was getting clutch weights. He threw the ignition thing out there so I thought I'd question it. I also have a high end ping at around that 7000 mark, can't quite put my finger on that one. That also makes me question the ignition. I don't need more rpms this thing did 300ft at 6.6 seconds on a stopwatch at 6400. Made the last weight change got it up to 6800 didn't time it, seems awesome though. the 7000 happens after full shift out after 300ft. Thanks guys, Doc Thanks Rick, I've bugged you too much already. Wish us luck on sunday.
