Default First oil change on the 500 H.O. ---A walk thru...

Hi all..

Thought I would post this for the other 500 ho owners out there that havent completed their first oil change.
I did my first break in oil change yesterday..
Thought I would post how it went and the tools needed..

I have not seen a walkthru here and thought It would help out all the new guys. All in all it wasnt that hard. I had a manual and followed it thru step for step so it was pretty easy for a first timer. If i missed anything here please speak up.

The tools......

Beer= a few bottles...
Paper shop towels= about a roll..
Oil drain bolt= 9/16 socket
Oil sump (the bolt with the screen, return ot the engine)= 7/8 open end wrench and a crescent wrench.
Oil filter= Strap wrench and alot of cuss words..
Crankcase bolt = 14mm wrench and alot of news paper...
Oil breather line/reprime= Vice grips..

Ok

1) Dropped the bolt for the oil sump. 9/16 socket here.. Drained the oil out and cleaned off the bolt, had a little sludge on it.. Reinstalled the bolt.

2) Went to the other side and looked at the sump bolt that has the oil return to the engine.. After reading the thread "the son of a b*&#hing oil screen" This is the point I got nervous... What I did was took a 7/8 open end wrench, placed in on the bolt sideways. I used a crescent wrench to grab onto the edge of the 7/8 wrench and GENTLY tug, after a few tugs it finally came loose. I noticed if you just put the 7/8 on the oil sump bolt it tweeks the bottom on the oil sump unit therefore possibly cracking it. Placing the 7/8 sideways and using the crescent to looden the bolt works great.

3) Oil filter. I think the assembly line people use a hi torque wrench to put these filters on... I used a thick strap wrench from sears. After a few tries and a few cuss words it came off.. Go slow and get some paper towles under the oil fiter it will dump oil all over the belt housing. Cleaned out the fittings on the oil filter, lubed the O ring up on the new one and sinched it on...

4) Oil crankcase plug.. Use a 14mm open end wrench here. It is the bottom bolt on the bottom of the engine next ot the u joint on the driveline. When opened it will A= Drain about a cup or more of oil out. B= Miss the oil pan and dump oil all ofer the garage floor making a huge mess, place a load of newspaper under the wheeler. The oil shoots out, hits the side of the ujoint and sprays everywhere...

5) Filled the oil sump back up with 2 qts of oil...

6) Went to the top of the oil sump and pinched off the oil breather line about 2 inches from the sump itself (vice grips). Started the engine and let it idle for 30 seconds. Pulled off the vice grips and didnt head a release of air like you should.. Shut off the engine and put the grips back on the oil line. Started the engine up again. Ran it for 30 seconds, this time I shut it off. Pulled the grips off the line and heard the ever so sweet sound of " PHSHHHHH" the air releasing.

All in all thats about it... Pretty easy... Oh yeah, the beer came after the air released from the line!
It took about 1 hour.

I did that once. The old "plumbing" was running like a swiss watch but the quad lost its balance and puked beer all over the place. The next morning, it slept in and picked a fight with the lawnmower.
