Carb adjustments

Can someone offer me some pointers on a 2003 Sprortsman 500HO?
It take a few tries to start it and need to always choke it till it warms up. It has done this from day 1. My 2000 Sportsman starts in seconds and stays running good, so unless thats the nature of a HO there has to be some improvments on the carb settings.
I have rebuilt and tunes car carbs, just never messed with the ATV ones.
Thanks in advace for you help,

Its posible the pilot jet, which controls the fuel flow at idle, is partially obstucted. A crusty old spark plug may be an issue too. So first , try a new spark plug, then check the pilot jet, and then if neither of those helps, then try 1/4 turn out on the mixture screw.
Are you using pure gas, or ethenol blended? If youre using the blended gas, try running it empty, and then filling up with a tank of pure gas, and see if that helps. Ethenol blended gas is about 10% leaner than pure gas, and because quads use carbs, which arent self adjusting like fuel injection, its posible to see drivability issues, using the leaner gas.

Most likely, the carb will need to be loosened, and rotated, so you can take off the float bowl. Then remove the pilot jet and clean it good.
Id try the 1/4 turn of the mixture screw first, that may be all it needs.

Yes I had The same prob with my scram adjust the air fuel screw you will have to drill out the brass plug on the side of the carb to get at it be carefull use a smaller bit drill in easy till you go through the plug then use something to stick in the hole and pop it out. Turn the screw in till lightley seated then turn out about 1 1/2 to 2 turns out and adjust from there till you get a good idle. it worked for me.
Good luck
