the sensor would be a good place to start. its highly unlikely its that hot. unless the coolent is not cycling at all.

The bike will sit for a day and as soon as you turn the key on it flashes "HOT". Where is the sensor located and how much does it cost?

Polaris had a recall last year on certian sportsman models because of defective ECMs.Do a search to find out if yours was one on the recall list.if so the dealer should replace for nothing.

unplugging the fan wouldnt fix it. your ecm must be out, im thinking a bad sensor would cause fan to run constantly. but the hotlamp sensor is a different sensor i believe. so both of them would have to be out.. right?

There is a recall on bad ECM's, check with the dealer. www.consumeraffairs.com lists the recall for 04 and 05 400's, 500's etc.
