Helmet Use...Or Lack Of
#61
This whole issue was suppose to be about young children not wearing helmets. If some stupid adult wants to risk his head by not wearing a helmet, let him - but when it comes to children, there should not be a choice. They don't understand the consequences of not wearing one.

Good points, Doctor, and yes I do understand where you're coming from.It could be argued from here to eternity as to what level of safety devices should be used at what times and in which situations. As SafetySean stated earlier, it does come down to a risk vs. reward decision. Each of us will make or fail to make the correct decisions regarding our safety and the safety of others and we will live the rest of our lives with those decisions. All I can add here is to use the best common sense you have and be prepared to live with the consequences of your decisions.
I think you see my point to, and that is the only reason I posted. There is no black in white in this descussion. If anybody thinks so or states it as so, I'm up for a debate.
BTW; just for the record, I always wear my helmet on the trail or in the race car. However, around the ranch I never wear my helmet. If I did I would have to wear one when I'm on my tractor, because I drive my tractor faster than my quad!!! Ha ha ha, you get that way when you get old.
Everybody please be safe out there. Please don't drink and ride. Drink all you want when your done riding; I don't care and neither does anybody else for that matter.
Please don't ride over your head. If you do, your going to get hurt. When I was younger, getting hurt never really slowed me down much. But thinking about hurting someone else really slowed me down because I could not live with that.

Okiedude - You're right. I got so wrapped up in the issue of 67X not making his kids wear helmets, that I got distracted from the 1st post. Although I am totally against riding an ATV without a helmet, I feel that adults are old enough to make their own (sometimes stupid) decisions on whether they should wear helmets or not. But I do feel that when it comes to kids, that helmets are 100% a MUST!
To 67X - I am glad you ordered new helmets for your kids. That will be a decision you will never regret! Your kids will be a little stubborn at first. Stick with it (have consequences if you catch them without their helmets) and after awhile, the helmet wearing will come natural! Also, don't forget: helmets do no good if they are not properly buckled!
As far as your daugher I still believe she is a bit young (no matter how athletic) to be on a 90. I recommend that you provide adult supervision each time she rides.

I have been looking over the posts and had to put my 2 cents in. I use my 700 as a work horse. I pick rock seed grass in crp and put in feed plots in for wildlife in the summer. I also spay with it as well. When i work the wheeler i don't have a helmet on. If i trail ride i do. I hope they DO NOT pass a law telling me I have wear a helmet when i am in my field picking rocks in july.

Actually, the kids aren't stubborn at all. You have to understand, to quantify the situation, we don't yet trail ride, I just started clearing a bit, but it will take a couple months to get my trails made, so, they are riding on grass. The terrain is rolling, but I mow it so it isn't extreme. The only trees they could come in contact with right now are near the house, so they ride in circles along the outside edge. I think you have this impression of a ton of hazards. Nonetheless, the transition has been decided and acted on.
As far as her ability to handle a 90, if I had any reservations, the 50 would still be here. If you saw her ride, you'd know what I mean. She can park it, understands the dynamics of backing out and turning opposite the intended direction, leaning and shifting weight in turns, etc. She handles it at least as well as the 50, but respects the extra speed- that 50 was boring her as much as her PW quad did before we gave that away, and she is not an absolute beginner anyway. She started at 3 on Power Wheels (hardly comparable, but was in intro), then moved on to ride a friend's Raptor 80. In between, she's ridden with me ad nauseum, always getting a lesson. Everything in our household comes with a lesson attached, just like my dad did with me. Please- don't worry about her and the 90, all kids are different and some are ready earlier. She is also blessed with amazing coordination and athletic ability, uncommon even for kids up to age 9 or so.
Thanks, though, for the concern.

umm.. i skipped the 2nd and 3rd page of posts on this topic, but anyway, i have been riding since age 4, my dad has always told me "put on you're helmet when you're riding" and as soon as i got away from him, i'd take it off. I have always hated wearing helmets and as a matter of fact, i had to go to court for not wearing one like a year ago, because a 88 year old woman and a 90 year old man thought that it was too unsafe for teenagers to ride without helmets. Im not going to go into detail about that but there was no need for what they put me through, they could've just asked me to put my helmet on, but anyway, im sorry, ill take the risk, riding atv's is one of the funnest things in the world, and (as errogant and stupid as it MAY sound) i think wearing a helmet while riding takes ALOT of the "fun-ness" out of the sport. So since i do not feel comfortable AT ALL wearing one, i wont. However, if i have kids, i will make them get used to wearing one.
