If your machine is stock. Run What you manual says, plain and simple!

Let the what type of gas wars continue. =]

Exactly- I have a 2005 sportsman 500 HO and I have never really thought about it but.....
the owners manual calls for 89 octane which would be mid grade .not the 87 octane regular that we have here in Minnesota. HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

Pre-detonating is the fuel igniting before the spark. When the spark does ignites the fuel it "Slams" the other flame front and makes a "Ping" "knock" sound, that’s why its called pinging or knocking. Dieseling is the fuel igniting without a spark and keeps the engine running with out a spark. Like when the motor keeps running after you turn the key off. Higher octane prevents the fuel from igniting without spark.

not to mention when your timing is advanced to far you get the same reaction not shuting off. good example of the dieseling is how a trator trail engine works w/out spark. pure compression to cause the ignition of the fuel.

If your engine has a high compression ratio, then use the 91 octane, if not, use 87. The perfromance could actually be hinderd by using a higher grade of gas. Just do a search for it on the forums and the information is there...
