Default 01' trailblazer 250, making knocking noise? HELP!!! :)

i just recently purchansed a used 01 trailblazer 250, started it up, and it was making this rattling, knocking type noise, as if something was loose? one person said it was the drive clutch, one person said it was because they didnt use the right oil in it. Has anyone had this problem in a polaris trailblazer before? or have any suggestions as to what is wrong? i just bought the service manual to make sure i can change things out the right way. any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks so much in advance!

Most coman problem for knocking is the buttons in the drive clutch. If caught in time you can replace them and not the whole clutch. The other two things that will cause a knock is piston slap from a wore out topend or a wore piston pin bearing.Nothing from using the "wrong oil" just typical 2stroke wear.

are these problems that i could fix myself? or would it pay just to bring my quad to a service dealership. Is there any way to determine wether its the clutch or the pistons? Right now it feels like its not getting to its maximum acceleration. That would mean its the clutch right? Thanks again!

If you have a clutch puller you can take the clutch off and start it to see if the noise quits. If it does it is the clutch if not it is in the motor. These 250s are rather simple to do a topend on if you have basic motor skills and the tools along with a service manual.

the noise change when giving rpm's?sounds stupid but on my wifes the clutch cover would rub a little and make a knocking noise. just pull the cover off and take a listen. becareful of the moving clutch.

yes i thought it might have been the cover too, but it still makes the noise when i take the clutch cover off. It doesnt make the noise at the high rpm's, it makes it when its comming down from it. and there is slack in the clutch when i push on it, is that supposed to be tight that i would not be able to do that? I would do a compression tests to see if the cylinder is worn, this would elimate piston slap. My trailblazer blaster and 250r have a slight knocking noise when the engine is deacclerating, letting off the throttle. i think it is common with two strokes.
