Predator 500 Tires?
#1
I currently have holeshot HD 's all around on my predator 500 and I noticed when I was on the track yesterday, that I was slipping and sliding pretty bad, where my raptor 660 hooked up almost perfectly with the stock tires. I was wanting to know if anyone had recomendations for track tires to ride on the packed dirt of the tracks. I'm lossing time on the track because of this. Also, could I have the tires pumped up too much? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Hmmm, I run Holeshot's and hook up great. Might check the pressure, I run 5.5 pounds. Not sure of what surface is like where you are, but here it's pretty loose most of the time. If the air doesn't work, might try some Kenda Klaw MX also.

Thanks for all of the advice, I'll try 5.5 lbs and if that doesn't work I'll look into maxis razr's. Once again, I appreciate all the info!

Well, I checked, and I'd been running 5.5 lbs the whole time, so I'm looking for some tires now. I think that the problem with mine, is that there are too many ***** and it doesn't have enough dig. I found a pair I like, the ITP Trac Stars, and was wondering if anyone has used these in the past, and if so, what they think of them. Thanks for all of the input.
To answer Webopper, the terrain here is really dry and dusty, so the dirt is packed hard.

I looked at the tires you were mentioning, and they are for very loose conditions, even muddy riding. You will have very little rubber on the ground with those and that's a bad thing. Based on what you are saying, I would say look at the ITP HoleShot XC series (XC are 18", XCR are 20", and XCT are 22") or like Spyder runs, the Maxxis Razr II's as they are also great for hard pack. I also run XC's and as you can imagine out here is often hard pack...

I appreciate all of the info, I'm going to try to decide which ones are best out of these, but I'm still kinda confused here. I'd think that having less, more spaced out *****, would mean that the weight is more focused on a smaller area, right? So, wouldn't this mean that with more force on less *****, they'd dig a lot better? This is the case for my raptor tires and they will literally never lose grip, I can't even slide. These are the stock tires, but they look identical to the ITP Trac Stars, which is why I wondered about them. Because of the better grip I can get a lot better lap time, even though I know my pred could out run it.

If you are able to break the surface with your knobbies, then that's not hard pack. Hard pack is like running on concrete, hence the need for more surface area on the tires touching the ground. Picture the drag racers and their big old slicks. All rubber touching the ground, that is where you get the best traction. If you are able to break the dirt up with your knobbies, then that changes the game plan. Like I said though, it's hard to confuse hard pack. If it's hard, no knobbies are tearing it up, and your's wouldn't be any different. If knobbies are tearing it up, it's no longer hard pack, it's loose dirt...
I recommend you go to RockyMountain ATV and pull up the tire and wheel section. When you select a tire, the description will come up to tell you what that tire is made for. After that, decide what the conditions really are like the majority of the time you are riding, and go from there.
Tire selection can be a funky process...lots of stuff to consider.
