I have been taking my atv in some water lately and the muffler is getting pretty bad, how do u kno if this is just surface rust, and if it is, should u sand it off? , i always wonderend about this and although it may be stupid, heck, i may aswell find out.

I noticed to on my '03 600 my muffler is still nice and black while others are already crusty and rusty. why the difference? Exhaust temps vary? When I clean mine up I always wipe down the muffler???????

 

i never get my muffler lol, its because the dirt and rust messes up my rags lmao

 

my mufflers always discolor some but i always pressure wash the mud off to avoid the rust building. i think if you leave the mud on it, it may hurt it in the long run. just a guess. if you decide to sand off the surface rust if thats what it is make sure you re paint w/ heat paint to stand the hot pipe.
