a friend of mine just bought a 04 sp 700 twin that tops out about 46 mph at 6400 rpm seems like clutch is not shifting out all the way has plenty of low end power but feels like hitting rev limiter. is this normal?

Your right sounds like the clutch is not shifting out all the way. Have you check the limiter nut on the primary clutch? Sometimes they back off and don't let the clutch shift all the way out. Also have you checked the belt to make sure is not wore out?

i found this plastic nut in the primary clutch backed off almost all the way the belt was only going up about 3/4 of the pulley when reved up. after i tightend the nut all the way then retested belt went all the way to the top. is there any reason not to tighten the nut all the way? does it have to set a certain way? hope it does not push belt
up off the pulley at higher rpms. thanks for your help

I thought that would be it. You need to just tighten it up pretty snug. Also you should put some loc-tite on it to keep it from backing off. Don't worry your belt won't come off of the primary.

I had the exact same thing happen to me a few weeks back. Tightened up that plastic nut and that fixed it.

my 04 sportsman 700 twin (carb) has the 4 wheeler drive shaft's and gearbox removed so its alot lighter does great wheelies and i hit 67 mph with 1 inch thread mudlight tires everything else is stock and still my buddies 2002 sporsman 500 ho has more top speed than me but i have him for the pull out (after 1 mile im still ahead by about 100 feet) but if we r driving fast and we r side by side at 50 mph and we open them up i get about 1 lenth away then he slowly passes me but not by much

Default Help!! 04 sportsman 700 twin top speed

Sounds like I have the same problem. My 700 twin runs great but tops out at about 45 mph. Exactly where would i find the "plastic nut" on the primary clutch? Does anyone have pictures?

Yes please post a picture of where this NUT is on the primary. Although my 700 does 63, I haver had my clutch completely apart and not seen a plastic nut.
