Since the awd is working in reverse it fairly rules out a mechanical problem. It sound like a possible electrical propblem from the switch to the hilliard. You can diagnose this by separating the connector going from the switch to the hilliard, pluging in a voltmeter to the connector on the switch side, turning the key or engine on and throwing the awd switch. You should have @ 12v at the connector.

also note: that the AWD light will come on when in reverse and i am pressing the overide button
and the awd works fine.but it will not come on at all in forward gears low or high,i even pressed the overide buton in forward and still no AWD light and no AWD.

also note: the neutral light will not come on at all either,i checked the bulb and it is fine.

That even makes it more imperative that you check the connector as I explained. If there is no voltage at the connector follow the lead toward the switch and see where the fault is. There must be a link between the gear selector and the switch that is causing the problem. You may be able to download a service manual that has the wiring diagram if you get stumped due to the wires running into the harness.

If you have the letters at the bottom of your guage that tells you which gear you in ( H, L, N , R ) make sure there working. If not that will keep AWD from operating..
