Well lets here of the different ways you guys(girls) change your oil......Do you really need to go through all the steps in the manual???????come on...can't you drain the oil from the drain plug......remove the filter......add new oil(0W40)syn. well, they'res the extra oil bubbleing around in the crank case, probebly ends up being a 1/3 of a quart. priming your oil pump is for when there isnt any oil left in the lines

Why have the filter then......If it's only about 1/3 of oil left......the filter should pick up any deposits left in that small amount.....besides it's synthetic oil....... also.......when you do your car's oil do you let it drain for about two hours??????NO...so there is still some oil left there also...caper....

Why do a half-arsed job?
I just changed the oil on my '06 500 HO three days ago. The oil tank drain plug and the filter are definitely the easy parts. The crankcase drain plug isn't in the best place but is fairly easily doable. The oil tank screen filter is another story. First you have to disconnect the rubber tubingf from the line, which was a fair PITA. Once that is off, it takes a 22mm wrench to remove and install the fitting. I used two wraps of teflon tape when I put it back on and it took three turns to line things up. Two quarts of oil put the level about 3/4 of the way into the normal range on the dipstick.
The whole process is easier if you remove the floorboards from each side.

Does Polaris call for priming the pump on the newer models? the reason I ask is because in the manual for the 99-00 500 Scrambler they never say anything about it in the oil& filter change

ALWAYS PRIME THE OIL!!!!!! My boss on his Ranger drained the res BUT not the crankcase and still blew the motor. I always drain the res and crankcase but not always the screen. I've heard of people cracking the res trying to get the screen out but mine was good. And if you went to get an oil change in your $35,000 truck would you like it if they only changed some of the oil and sometimes the filter??????
