Default New and looking at a Sportsman and have questions

will know hopefully exact details in the next day or two but i'll try to keep it as short as I can. My friend has a Sportsman in his shop thats been there a couple years, it looks like around a 400 but I cant remember. its automatic 4x4 green in color. It used to run pretty well but my buddy decided to *soup* it up and do some head work and now the engine no longer runs due to unknown catastrophic failure. Well I might be able to get it from him dirt cheap or trade him a '77 Ford I have for it. i'd rather trade him being as i'm poor but I dont want to get the shaft considering my investment into the truck. I think its a 98 or 99 model. I was just wondering how reliable these years are, value of it in good shape minus engine, what I might be looking at in repair costs for an engine overhaul etc. I am a Ford tech but have never worked on atvs much at all, just rode them so how hard is engine/trans related work on them? Also is it a belt driven trans?
