Default predator 50, difficult to start

This is a repost as the other one has some sort of error.

When we try to start my daughters predator 50 (05') after it has been sitting for a few days, it won't start. If I remove the spark plug and squirt some gas in the hole and replace the plug, it will fire right up. Once this happens it runs fine and stays running without any difficulty. After it has been running and you shut it off and restart it, it will fire right up just like the day we bought it. Also, if i start it every day or every other, it will fire right up. But if it sits for an extended period (more than a couple of days) then the difficulty starts all over again.

I undersatand it is a fuel problem, but what kind? is simply the carb needs to be cleaned? or the float? or ???????????????

The fuel in the tank is fresh and the quad has about 25 hours ride time.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Yeah, sounds like possibly the carb might need cleaned up a bit.....especially the pilot jet. I don't know about these quads.....but if there is a choke, might adjust it(or make sure it works).......

I have the exact same problem/condition. I've found that tipping it up on its two left wheels at about 45 degrees makes it start a little easier, but it still cranks for a while.

just curious if you've figured out the problem with your predator 50? i purchased a brand new '06 predator 50 for my son for christmas and have the exact same problem that you have with your '05. the purchase of this bike has been a TOTAL disappointment. i doubt that your problem is a dirty carb as my son's bike has fresh gas and hasn't even had a full tank through it. not only will the bike not start if it sits for more than a day or two, the plastic fenders are extremely brittle and have cracked with very little force applied to them. i've always owned hondas and would have purchased a honda for my son if they made a smaller quad (honda's smallest quad is a 90). the hondas that i've owned have been bulletproof machines and i've never had a problem starting them. the thing that is most frustrating is that i went to the dealer (large dealership in northern delaware) planning on purchasing a yamaha 50 or kawasaki 50 but the salesman said that he couldn't sell either the yamaha or kawasaki in good conceince.

mzerbe,

i wish i had some good news for you, but i don't. my situation has not gotten any better. i had it to the dealer not to long ago and of course after his carb adjustment it worked fine....for about a week. then it sat for a few days without being started and i am back to square one. it cranks and cranks, but won't start. if i pull the air filter from the side and squirt the gas in it that way it will turn right over, but only run until what i squirted in the side runs out. if i try to just start in the correct way and pull the plug it is fouled and wet. so for some reason it is imediately flooding. off to the dealership we go again.

i am very frustrated. this thing has been babied from the start. my daughter has less than 30 hrs on it and those are very easy, mellow go in a big circle hours. i would trade it off for the 07' 90 (4 stroke finally) but i have son younger than her that i would like to pass it on too and he is to small for the 90's. all that said, i am taking it in tomorrow...again. i will see if this a long time problem or what? i have had a great relationship with my dealer so i dont think he is putting the screws to me? hope not. i may see about a trade also if this is going to be a long term problem. all the other polaris i have owned have worked pretty close to flawless...even after my son rolled the 90 backwards down a hill...landing on him. i will post more as soonas i get an answer.

I have an '07 pred 50 with the same issue, it's pretty hard to get going on the initial start. It used to start really well, but would not return to idle after giving it some throttle, so I took it back to the dealer and he "fixed" it. This is why I usually work on my own stuff.

I have an '05 Pred 50, and dont have the problems that you are talking about (thankfully). One thing, do you shut the gas off when done riding? If not, gas could be leaking into the cylinder and flooding out.

The way we start ours is, choke and then pump the throttle a couple of times, and she starts up fairly quickly. We have a '01 Scrambler 50 that does not start as easy as the Pred.

Just make sure to shut the gas off at the valve everytime you ride it...this should help. I have to do this on my wifes 400 also.

Hope this helps, and keep us informed if you figure anything out!

I have an 04 Predator 50cc and have some of the same problems. After the bike got hot from riding, if you turned it off and tried to start it again it would. but if it set for five minutes it wouldn't start. If you let it sit for at lest an hour after that it would start. Was never able to figure that part out .
when it doesn't start, I clean the spark plug and (most of the time ) it starts up. If it sits for awhile is when it is the worst. One time I found that it had no spark. I found that the spark plug cap wasn't screwed into the wire all the way. When I screwed it on tight it stated. If you find out anything from a dealer
PLEASE let us all know.

Bought a Kawi 50 for my grandson 3 years ago, have never had a problem with it . Runs like a clock withcountless hours on it. He's 8 now and has always started it himself. It has a prime =run position on the fuel switch with a pull start, good bike.
