Having problems with no / low power in high range. Can't get it to go over 25mph, acts like bad gas or spark plug. Checked both, also replaced drive belt. It sputters & misses when driving it, low range a little better but not much. What should I be looking for. Dealer told me sounds like electrical.

 

Check the slack in your throttle cable, should be very little, adjustment is about 4 inches from thumb throttle, to much slack causes the etc, electronic throttle control to engage like the throttle was sticking.Hope this helps.

 

I checked the slack, there was a little. I tighten it up, didn't help . Thanks for info. Ordered shop manaul, maybe I can locate problem.

 

Had a similar problem with my '04 Sportsman. I thought bad gas, spark plug etc. For mine, the answer was wayyyyy too simple. I pulled the air fliter and found that it was packed with fine dust from a couple of trips to the local mx/atv area. Blew it out with the compressor for a quick fix then replaced later. Wow, imagine what a clean filter will do (felt like a complete idiot). Not sure if this is your problem, and maybe you've already looked at that, but your problem sounds identical. Replaced air cleaner in May, looks fine. I tried to take carb off but can't figure out how to get throttle cable off of carb. Service manual no help. Any ideas?

 

Finally found problem. Cleaned carb & it stilll was running like crap. I took off ams airfilter (which is foam) & put old air filter on. Well it ran fine then. Foam filter didn't look dirty.

 

Glad to see that you found the problem. Love my '04 500 ho but now thinkin' I need the 800 efi. Wife and bank both say yes, so now just have to get off my duff and go for it. We'll see....Gern
